Wednesday Caving: The Next Generation by Jack Upsall

Browgill – Calf Holes and back: Jack, Pete, Gen, Fay, Dennis and… Fraser and Erin (J’s grandchildren), Dillon and Zachary (P&G’s kids) (3rd July 2016).

With something like 63 years separating the youngest from the oldest, it was definitely a mixed group walking over first to peer down Calf Holes, and then to assemble at the entrance to Browgill.

E and F had been to the top of the climb a couple of years before and into Valley Entrance last year so they sort of knew what they were letting themselves in for – but for D and Z it was to be their first taste of caving…

And impressive they all were. The pools are quite deep and the climbs are quite big when you are only 6, 8 or 10; though they got their own back in the hands and knees sections – which weren’t, for them!

Dennis took us through the dry flat out alternative at the connection. Pete enjoyed this bit, too!

The open pot and waterfall, and Dennis produced chocolate orange for the kids (bribes always work!) Snacks all round, and back to emerge into sunshine.

A great day.
